Remember when western movies and TV shows were in vogue? Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Wild Wild West? The rustic towns with flat landscapes, gun-slinging heroes, town brothels, and the everpresent saloons were hugely popular in the 1950s, 60s, and early 70s.

The shows fell by the wayside as consumer tastes changed. People seemed to tire of the familiar settings, predictable characters and stories, problematic themes, and lack of diverse casts. Beginning in the mid-1980s, Hollywood began producing westerns again but with a twist. Called Neo-westerns, which are movies and shows ranging from Dances with Wolves and Unforgiven in the ‘90s to Yellowstone, Dark Winds, and many Taylor Sheridan-produced Paramount+ shows since the 2020s.

The culture and costumes resemble the old productions, but the stories and themes are updated to center present day challenges, reflect broad diversity in the characters, and demonstrate enlightened perspectives. Grab a cup of tea and join us for this episode of the Cup of Tea Critiques Podcast, where we talk about the transformation from traditional to Neo-westerns.

Send us a comment to let us know which Neo-westerns you watch and what you find appealing about them.
