Despite being some of the oldest books in existence, Greek mythological stories and their characters have had a strong, lasting imprint on contemporary cinema. Consider that the themes and even characters modeled after those in the original books have been almost seamlessly adapted in recent movies like Face Off, The Silence of the Lambs, and O Brother, Where Art Thou?. Add to this that modern film technology presents the opportunity for cinephiles to experience movies with bigger than life characters (literally) from stories predating the birth of Christ. Imagine seeing Jason and the Argonauts, The Return, and Clash of the Titans—all films featuring Greek mythological figures and gods—on IMAX screens or in 4DX theaters.

Along with the impending release of the The Odyssey later this month, these realizations make us wonder about the appeal of these types of films, and if audiences prefer movies about the Greek gods themselves or modern-day films adapted from books’ storylines. Join us on this episode of the Cup of Tea Critiques Podcast as we explore the cinematic tastes for movies in this genre.
