“The book was better”: What do audiences expect from movie adaptations like The Odyssey and Hunger Games?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The Odyssey will be opening soon, and it promises to be epic in both experience and duration. Homer’s mythological poem penned by him in the eighth century BCE is about Odysseus’s journey home after the fall of Troy. Like many great books, the story is full of lofty descriptions and told with exquisite detail. Chances are, none of us is worried about Christopher Nolan’s ability to pull off this film.
But exactly what are the obligations of a filmmaker to abide by the source material once they have purchased the rights to the screenplay? Should moviegoers have any expectations beyond an entertaining and engaging experience with tea and popcorn in hand? Join us on this episode of the Cup of Tea Critiques Podcast to consider the audience and filmmaker’s roles in movie adaptations.
